5 Tips to Save Tulsi from Dying in Winter 🌿

Winter used to be the hardest season for my Tulsi plants 🌿❄️. A few years back, I lost one healthy Tulsi almost overnight after a sudden cold wave, and honestly I didn’t even realize what went wrong initially. The leaves started drooping, stems became soft, and within days the whole plant looked exhausted.

Since then, I became much more careful during colder months. Over time I noticed Tulsi doesn’t really hate winter completely — it just struggles with cold winds, wet soil, and lack of warmth. Once I adjusted a few simple things, my plants started surviving winters much more comfortably.

If your Tulsi plant also starts looking weak during winter, these small habits genuinely help a lot, especially in terrace and balcony gardens.

1. Keep Tulsi Warm and Sheltered 🌞

One thing I noticed very quickly is that Tulsi absolutely dislikes cold wind. Even when the sunlight was decent, chilly air at night stressed the plant badly.

During peak winter, I usually shift my Tulsi closer to a sunny wall or near a bright window where it still receives good morning sunlight. That little extra warmth honestly makes a huge difference.

If keeping it outside, covering the plant lightly at night with a cotton cloth or frost cover helps protect the leaves from sudden cold damage. At least on my terrace, uncovered plants always struggled more during foggy winter nights.

2. Water Smartly πŸ’§

One mistake I made initially was watering Tulsi exactly the same way I did during summer. That honestly caused more damage than the cold itself.

In winter, soil stays wet much longer because evaporation slows down. Tulsi roots hate sitting in soggy cold soil.

Now I always check the top layer before watering. If the soil still feels slightly moist, I wait another day. This simple habit reduced root problems a lot on my terrace.

I also prefer watering in the morning. Leaves dry faster during daytime and fungal problems become less common. Evening watering during winter never worked very well in my experience.

3. Prune and Remove Dry Leaves ✂️

Winter Tulsi often develops yellow or dry leaves slowly, especially near the lower stems. Earlier I used to leave them untouched, but over time I realized the plant keeps wasting energy trying to support weak growth.

Now I regularly remove dry leaves and lightly pinch flower spikes during colder months. The plant usually stays bushier and healthier afterward.

Heavy pruning during peak cold is something I avoid though. Gentle cleanup works much better.

4. Soil Mix Matters 🌱

What surprised me was how strongly Tulsi reacts to poor drainage during winter. Even healthy plants started declining once the soil became compact and sticky.

A loose soil mix honestly keeps the roots far safer. I usually prefer:

  • 1 part garden soil
  • 1 part sand
  • 1 part compost

This kind of airy mix drains excess water faster while still holding enough moisture for the plant. At least on my terrace, Tulsi growing in heavy clay soil struggled much more during winter.

5. Feed with Organic Nutrients 🌿

Tulsi growth slows naturally in winter, so heavy fertilizers usually don’t help much. In fact, one mistake I made earlier was giving too much nitrogen during cold weather. The new growth became weak and sensitive very quickly.

Now I prefer light organic feeding once a month. Diluted cow dung liquid or compost tea works gently without stressing the plant.

The leaves usually stay greener and healthier this way.
